The meaning of māla

The meaning of māla

A Word That Weaves Worlds Together…and has deep roots.

Māla. It’s a fun word to say, and if you’ve travelled enough, you’ll know there’s a whole universe of meanings wrapped up in those four letters!

Believe it or not, it’s all intentional!

Fun fact: māla girl originally started off as “earth girl”. When we went for our trademark “earth girl” was already taken in no less than 20 categories, including teas and spices, so with her logo, we went back to the drawing board.

Her name as we use it, means “garden” in Hawaiian.  When we got our thumbs up on māla girl it was extremely powerful. As the founder of this brand, what many people don’t know is that my mother passed away from cancer just before my 13th birthday. She always told me we were going to go to Hawaii when I graduated high school. Sadly, that didn’t happen.  Fast forward to having my own child, I made that promise to him. He is now 16 years old, and with graduation just around the corner, we will travel there for the first time together. Most definitely, a full circle and spiritual moment for us!

Ok, let’s get back to more mala, especially when we take off the macron on the ā!

“Bad” in Spanish and Italian. Yes, we’ve heard it! Bad girl superpowders.  She’s fun. If you’re a bad @## chef looking for REAL ingredients, we’ve got you.

If you If you crave a cup of māla girl and an amazing croissant is calling your name to go along with it, we call it balance 🧘‍♀️

“Spicy” in Szechuan cooking. Two of our girls bring the spicy without the Sichuan pepper.  If spicy is your thing, you’ll want to meet chili chakra and fireball basil.

“Garland” or “Wreath” in Sanskrit. The māla is a spiritual tool that helps guide the user toward mindfulness, peace, and enlightenment. It’s a garland not just of beads, but of our hopes, dreams, and inner wisdom.

Each māla girl flavor is truly their own culinary personality. Our cravings have moods, and māla girl was designed to feed them.

We believe in the passion of “food is a feeling”. It’s an emotion that brings people together. Māla girl is here to help make that more effortless with ingredients our bodies deserve.
